I went to Formula 1 for speed and action, but came away wondering if we all need to hit the brakes sometimes! 😆 This weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of hosting a fireside chat with former F1 driver and Sky Sports analyst Karun Chandhok at the Airwallex hospitality suite during the Singapore Grand Prix. I’ve spent years studying leadership, and I was excited to talk to Karun about high performance because he has operated in an environment where decisions are made in fractions of a second and the stakes are enormous. In the fireside chat, one of my biggest takeaways was when Karun shared that his big lesson was to know not how to speed up, but how to slow down. Not reacting to every single thing immediately and being aware of his blind spots was his most important life lesson. It was really interesting to hear because we live in a world that rewards speed. We admire leaders who think on their feet, act decisively and always seem to have an answer for everything. And I will still say that being able to move quickly is a tremendous advantage. However, there is a huge difference between responding quickly and reacting impulsively. Like receiving an email that you speed read and immediately send an angry response to, only to find you read it wrong! Or interrupting someone in a meeting because you’re feeling defensive? Or blurting out something hasty and thoughtless? (BTW I’ve certainly been guilty of all three. ) The irony is that sometimes, the faster we react, the longer we spend cleaning up the mess afterwards. That’s where emotional mastery comes in and also where the interesting paradox lies: emotional mastery doesn’t always mean slowing down. Sometimes you genuinely need to act fast, make a tough call and trust your judgement. Other times, the most powerful thing you can do is pause, listen and give yourself a moment to think. A huge thank you to Airwallex for inviting me into the world of F1, and to Karun for such an engaging conversation and for sharing his experiences from the sport. I’m curious: Are you naturally someone who reacts quickly, or do you prefer to pause and process before responding? #Leadership #Airwallex #McLarenRacing #F1 #paidpartnership
