When the Credit Dries Up, You Either Cut or You Close Equifax reported this week that high-risk small businesses are now credit shopping at four times the rate of their low-risk counterparts. Judo Bank, the SME specialist lender, lost 46% of its share value on three bad loans totalling $75 million. The signal is clear: banks are getting nervous about who they are lending to, and the era of easy credit top-ups to bridge a bad quarter is closing. ABC's business desk confirmed the numbers on July 24. SME insolvencies are up 13% in the six months to May 2026. Business exits up 37% year on year. More firms are taking 31 to 60 days to pay suppliers, up from 8.3% to 9.5% of all businesses. Victorian operators in particular are pulling back on growth capital entirely. Not investing. Not expanding. Just holding. The story underneath those numbers is that owners are running out of bridges. When you cannot borrow and cannot expand, you have one remaining lever: cut the cost of what you are already doing. This is where most owners freeze, because "cut" sounds like "fire people." But the biggest cost in a small regional business is not always payroll. It is the hours the owner and a couple of key staff spend on work that does not require a human mind. Invoicing. Following up overdue accounts. Rekeying data between systems. Generating quotes. Chasing leads. Compliance paperwork. Fifteen hours a week of administrative work at award clerical rates in regional Victoria is roughly $46,000 a year. An automated invoicing and follow-up system that handles most of that costs a few hundred dollars a month in software. The gap is not small. And unlike borrowing, those savings do not need to be repaid. They are a permanent structural reduction in your operating cost base. This matters more right now because credit is tightening. Equifax's Brad Walters said small businesses are pulling back on growth capital. High-risk businesses are shopping multiple lenders at once, which signals they cannot get ready access to finance. When the bank says no, you do not have the option of borrowing to cover the gap. You either reduce the gap or you close it the hard way. The ABC piece quoted a Victorian steel manufacturer who said "it feels a lot like 2020." The difference is that in 2020 the government handed out JobKeeper. This time there is no such safety net. Support exists. Tax breaks, zero-interest ERP loans, ATO concessions. But none of it replaces the money you bleed on work that does not need doing. I keep hearing from regional owners that they cannot afford to invest in AI right now. The question they should be asking is whether they can afford to keep paying full price for work a $200-a-month system does just as well. When the credit dries up, that is not a theoretical question anymore. It is the difference between the businesses that get through this cycle and the ones that become a statistic in next quarter's insolvency data. So here is the real question: if your bank called tomorrow and cut your overdraft in half, what would you stop doing first?
