Gate Executive Director Edwin Cheung: Cross-Border Payments Could Drive Crypto's Next Phase of Growth According to a recent report by AlphaWire, Gate Executive Director Edwin Cheung said in an interview during TOKEN2049 Singapore that payments will be a key growth area for Gate in the near future, serving individuals and businesses with everyday financial needs beyond cryptocurrency trading. Gate officially launched Gate Money on Oct. 7. Users can open a global electronic bank account in their own name through the Gate App and, as the rollout continues, receive payments in more than 60 local currencies, further connecting digital assets with everyday financial services. Cheung noted that stablecoins can reduce the number of correspondent banks involved in cross-border transfers and improve the transparency of fund movements. He expects stablecoins to coexist with traditional bank transfers, instant payments, and QR-code payments, with their role in cross-currency transactions likely to expand as services develop across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. By integrating fiat currencies, digital assets, stocks, ETFs, and gold, Gate Money aims to provide users with a more convenient, all-in-one financial services experience. On institutional services and security, Cheung noted that institutional investors remain highly concerned about liquidity and counterparty risks. Through its OES off-exchange settlement solution, Gate allows institutional clients to keep their assets with third-party custodians while still accessing Gate’s liquidity and a full range of trading services. Gate also enhances asset transparency through proof of reserves. Cheung emphasized that trust is essential across both institutional and payments businesses, and that Gate’s regulatory licenses, comprehensive risk management framework, and close cooperation with regulators in every market it serves will be key to sustaining business growth.
